Notes |
- Emily was living with her mother, Elizabeth Tatlock, at her grandparents home at 10 Spa Road, Bolton, at the time of the 1881 census. She was then aged one.
On the 1891 census she was aged eleven and living with her mother, grandparents and brother and sister at 7 Weston Street, Bolton.
Emily didn't have a happy home life. Her mother ruined her hair by trying out different hairstyles on it for herself. When she was aged 12 she was sent to a children's home in Edgworth, Lancashire. Her mother, Elizabeth Tatlock, hit the inspector over the head with an umbrella.
On 10th November 1892 Emily was admitted to the Children's Home at Edgworth, Lancashire. Her mother was said to be of 10 Derby Street, Bolton, and working as a dressmaker earning ten shillings a week. Emily's father, Thomas Tatlock, was said to have died in June 1891, away from home.
The circumstances of her admittance to the Home were given as follows:
"Continuous neglect. Mother and grandmother charged with theft, latter convicted. Mother prostitute, the girl (Emily) age 13 in great moral danger."
Emily was described as follows:
"an attractive girl, used by her grandmother - an oft convicted thief - for felonious purposes. Now in wretchedness and filth. Grandmother in prison, Mother living away in sin."
Emily's case was recommended by the Bolton Aid Committee of the National Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children. The report by their inspector, Walter Blake stated the following:
"The case was reported by Detective Gaskell, Borough Police, with a view to getting the eldest child, Emily Tatlock, aged 13 years, into some home to be trained as a domestic servant, as the home surroundings have a tendency to make the child a thief.
The accused, Elizabeth Tatlock (mother) has been getting her living as a comic singer at music halls.
There are five children, viz :-
Emily Tatlock aged 13 years
Annie Tatlock aged 8 years
Lillie Tatlock aged 5 years illegitimate
Percy Tatlock aged 2 years
Maggie Tatlock aged 6 months illegitimate
The accused having been separated from her husband and the child Lillie Tatlock aged 5 years having been born during the separation, is therefore an illegitimate. After the birth of this child the accused and husband lived together again when Percy aged 2 years was born. Afterwards the husband left and has not been heard of since. Then Maggie now aged 6 months was born being an illegitimate.
The accused is living with her parents at 95 Blackhorse Street, Bolton. The mother, Mrs Brockbank, is now under going a term of one month for theft. The accused has also been before the Magistrates for being in consort with her mother.
The accused is willing that the girl, Emily Tatlock, should be sent to some home. They are well nourished and the house fairly well furnished."
Whilst at the children's home, Emily met her friend Florence Bedford Waring. They eventually moved to Leicester to set up a cake shop.
She gave her age as 28 on her marriage certificate in 1911 when in reality she was 31. She gave her father's occupation as a hotel proprietor.
