      Thomas Clifton Sparhawk, of the famous old families of New England, few have had a uniformly better record than that of the Sparhawks. The family since ancient times has been well and favorably known not only in America, but also in England.

      (I) Lewis Sparhawk of Dedham, Essex County, England, is the first ancestor to whom the
      American branch of this family traces its decent. He was born about 1530 and married at
      Dedham, England, Feb 17, 1560, Elizabeth Bayning. Their children:

      Samuel Sparhawk son of Lewis Sparhawk was born at Dedham, Essex County,
      England about 1565 and bapt. Dec 26, 1571. He married. His children:

      Nathaniel Sparhawk, 4th child of Samuel2 Sparhawk, was born at Dedham, Essex County, England, where he was baptized Feb. 16. 1598. some of the variations of the spelling
      of this surname are natural enough. The records show it as Sparhawke, Sparhauk, Sparo-
      hauke, Sparrow Hawke.

      NATHANIEL SPARHAWK OF CAMBRIDGE, MASS.
      THE IMMIGRANT ANCESTOR.

      Nathaniel Sparhawk was the emigrant ancestor. He was at Cambridge, Massachusetts, New
      England as early as 1636 and was admitted a freeman there May 23, 1639. He was a deputy
      to the General Court. He was a leading citizen of that town, and was elected Deacon of
      the Church. His homestall was on the east side of Brighton Street, between Mount Auburn
      and Harvard Square. In 1642 he owned five houses and five hundred acres of land, and
      subsequently purchased more. Over a thousand acres of land were solde in settling his
      estate, leaving a large quantity of land on the south side of the river, now in the Brighton district, some of which was lately and may be at present, owned by members of the family - his descendants.

      He kept a public house (Inn) and was given permission to sell wine and strong water in 1639. He married (1) Mary Angier, the dau. of John Angier of Dedham, England. She died Jan. 25, 1643-44. He m. (2) Katherine _____, who died July 5, 1647. His children by his wife, Mary:

      Woburn, Mass.

      Nathaniel Sparhawk, the father, died June 28, 1647 aged about 50 years.

      (IV) Nathaniel Sparhawk the eldest child of Nathaniel3 Sparhawk was born at Dedham,
      England about 1630. He res. in the Brighton District of Cambridge, Mass., which has
      been the home of most of his descendants who have remained within the limits of ancient
      Cambridge, Mass. He was a distinguished citizen. He was elected Selectman in 1677 and
      served in that capactiy for nine years afterward. He also was a Deacon of the Church.
      His Will was dated Dec. 29, 1686, and the Inventory of his estate was filed Jan. 20, 1686-7. He m. October 3, 1649, Patience Newman, the dau. of Rev. Samuel Newman. Their children:
      1. Nathaniel Sparhawk b. Nov 3, 1650, died Feb 12, 1651.
      2. Mary Sparhawk b. 1652, married Oct 8, 1673, William Barrett.
      3. Sybil Sparhawk b. about 1655, died Aug 6, 1708 - m. (1) Dr. Jonathan Avery and she
      m. (2) the Rev. Michael Wigglesworth of Malden, Mass.
      4. Esther Sparhawk, bapt. May 5, 1661.

      6. Nathaniel Sparhawk, bapt. Nov. 3, 1667.
      7. John Sparhawk b. about 1672, grad. at Harvard College, 1689; a minister at Bristol and the ancestor of the 2nd Sir Andrew Pepperell. He died April 29, 1718.

      Samuel Sparhawk, 5th child of Nathaniel4 Sparhawk, was born in the Brighton District,
      Cambridge, Mass. and bapt. Feb 5, 1664; died Nov. 2, 1713 aged 49 yrs. He was admitted
      freeman in 1690 and was a leading in the town of Cambridge, Mass. and from 1701 to 1710
      served as a Selectman. He married Sarah Whiting, a dau. of the Rev. Samuel Whiting of
      Lynn, Mass. She died Dec. 8, 1752 aged 84 years. Their children:
      1. Sarah Sparhawk bapt. Sept 5, 1697; died Oct 9, 1701.
      2. Samuel Sparhawk b. Oct 2, 1698.
      3. Sarah Sparhawk b. Dec. 22, 1700.

      (VI) Thomas Sparhawk, 5th child of Samuel5 Sparhawk, was born in the Brighton District of
      Cambridge, Mass., May 25, 1706. Like the three generations of his Sparhawk ancestors, he
      was prominent in the town of Cambridge, Mass. He was a Selectman for the extraordinary
      period of 20 years, from 1744 to 1764 and was Justice of the Peace and the local Squire.
      He m. Mary Oliver, January 14, 1730, the dau. of Nathaniel Oliver. Their children:

      1. Mary Sparhawk b. Jan 3, 1731-32, m. June 21, 1753, Isaac Gardner, Jr. of Brookline,
      Mass.
      2. Elizabeth Sparhawk, bapt. Sept 3, 1733, m. June 21, 1753, Elisha Gardner of Brookline,
      Mass.
      3. Sybil Sparhawk, b. July 13, 1735, m. May 25, 1750, Samuel Aspinwall of Brookline, Mass.

      (VII) The Honorable Thomas Sparhawk, the 4th child of Thomas6 Sparhawk, was born at
      Cambridge, Mass. March 16, 1736-37 and died Nov. 1802 at Walpole, New Hampshire. He was
      a graduate of Harvard College, 1755 and became a teacher at Lunenburg, Mass. In 1769
      he removed to Walpole, New Hampshire and settled there. He carried on a farm and was also
      the proprietor of the first General Store in that town. Prior to the opening of this store, the settlers had to go to Northfield to do their trading. He was one of the most prominent and best known men in that county - a worthy successor of his distinguished ancestry. He was the first Representative that the town sent to the Legislature - in 1775 and he held many town offices, including Clerk of the Courts and Judge of Probate of Cheshire County, N.H. He m. July 10, 1758, Rebecca Stearns, who died Oct 31, 1803.

      6. John Stearns Sparhawk b. at Walpole and grad. at Dartmouth Coll 1796; died 1800.
      7. Jonathan Hubbard Sparhawk b. 1781; grad. M.B. at Dartmough Coll. 1812 - a surgeon in
      the U.S. Army in 1812; settled at Hartford; m. Clarissa Porter, dau. of Dr. Thomas Porter, of East Windsor, CT.; he removed to Springfield, Mass. 1818 and died 18__?
      8. Samuel Sparhawk, b. 1786; d. 1835; m. Sophronia Brown and had 8 children.


      (VIII) Thomas Sparhawk, Jr., eldest son of the Hon. Thomas7 Sparhawk, was born at Lunen-
      burg, Mass. April 12, 1760; died in 1848. He was fully as prominent as his ancestors. He
      lived at Walpole, N.H. and was active in the church. He was a man of strict piety and good works all his life. He was a Representative in the N.H. Legislature in 1795, 1796, 1798 and was a delegate to the State Constitutional Convention in 1783. He was a Lieutenant in the militia. He m. Octavia Frink the dau. of Dr. Thomas Frink of Keene, New Hampshire. Children:
      1. Thomas Sparhaw b. 1791; a grad. of Dartmouth in 1815; admitted to the Bar in 1817; died unmarried in 1838.
      2. Rebecca Sparhawk b. 1793.
      3. Octavia Sparhawk b. 1795.
      4. George Sparhawk b. about 1797.

      6. John Stearns Sparhawk b. 1801; d. 1841.

      (IX) George Sparhawk, 4th child of Thomas8 Sparhawk - was born at Walpole, N.H. 1797. He
      married Eliza Hammond of the well known family of that name of Newton, Mass.
      Their children:

      (X) George Henry Sparhawk, the son of George9 Sparhawk was born at Keene, N.H. Feb 1, 1824. At an early age he moved with his parents to Lebanon, N.H. where he received the early education in the common schools. He began his business career as clerk in the General Store there, but on account of his father's scruples against the sale of intoxicating liquors, which were at that time kept in stock by all the country stores, he gave up his position and went to work on the farm with his father. The family removed to the adjoining town of Rockingham, Vermont, where Mr. Sparhawk, Sr., carried on a large farm known as the Bellow's farm, and this George Henry Sparhawk assisted in carrying on for a number of years. Later he carried on a farm on his own account for a time, when he returned to the Bellow's farm, where he remained ten years, then removed to Walpole, on the old homestead, where his father had lived and died, and there he died Feb 1, 1873. He was a member of the Methodist Church of Bellows Falls, Vermont, and a Republican in politics. In proof of his character, it is related of him at one time that, being
      obliged to borrow a sum of money, he secured such a sum from his friend, Otis Arms. On being
      criticised for not taking security, Mr. Arms replied, "I dont need to - his word is as good
      as his bond; his honesty is unquestionable."

      He married Fannie Maria Webb, born May 7, 1826, the dau. of Colonel Bradford Webb &
      Fannie Webb of Bellows Falls, Vermont. Colonel Webb was a leading citizen in that section, a farmer and tavern keeper. The children of George H. Sparhawk and Fannie M. (Webb) Sparhawk were:
      1. Arthur George Sparhawk b. June 25, 1851; died Feb 26, 1871.
      2. Rollin Webb Sparhawk b. June 14, 1853; died May 7, 1879.

      4. Carlton Edward Sparhawk. b. July 14, 1861, at Rockingham, Vermont, m.July 23, 1902, Margaret McGillivray of Canada.

      Mr. Sparhawk is now and has been post-master at Walpole, New Hampshire - for a number of
      years.

      (XI) Thomas Clifton Sparhawk, the 3rd child of George Henry Sparhawk, was born at Walpole, N.H., on what is known as the Kilburn Farm - Aug. 2, 1859. He received a common school education in his native town, attending the high school until 18 yrs of age, when he began teaching. Later he entered the general store of George P. Porter at Walpole and remained as a clerk there about three years. He then pursued a one year's course of study at Tilton Seminary, Tilton, N.H., after which he accepted a position in the general store of Tuxbury & Stone at Windsor, VT. In September, 1883, he removed to Winchendon, where he worked for 3 years for F. A. Hayward, proprietor of a
      general store. After resting from labor for one year, on account of poor health, he entered the office of E. Murdock & Company, manufacturers of wooden-ware, but after a short time accepted the position with C. T. Stearns, a clothing merchant

      in the old Mason Block, Winchendon. In 1892, three years later, he purchased his present
      business, dealing in men's furnishings, boots and shoes. His store was in Union Block,
      Central Street, and the business has been very prosperous. Since 1893, a period of 13
      years, Mrs. Sparhawk has been the valued assistant in the business, to which she has
      given of her strength and judgment. Previous to the above named year, she had been and
      efficient and capable teacher in the schools of Winchendon.

      Mr. Sparhawk has taken an active part in the affairs of the town. He was a Director of the Winchendon Co-operative Bank. He was an active Republican and had served frequently
      as a delagate to important conventions of the Party. He was a member of the Walpole
      Congregational Church, Walpole, New Hampshire, Secretary of the North Congregational
      Sunday school, Winchendon, Massachusetts - three years, and was Assessor of the North
      Congregational Parish three years. He was a member of the Masonic Monomonock Lodge No.
      121, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and was the Treasurer one year. He formerly
      belonged to the Winchendon Country Club. May 4, 1906, Mr. Sparhawk purchased the D. H.
      Barnes estate on Lincoln Avenue, and on May 30th following, entered his new home. This
      is a large and finely constructed house with extensive grounds, a home of which anyone
      might be proud. Mr. Sparhawk married, December 25, 1883, Della Grace Witt, born at
      Walpole, New Hampshire, May 24, 1863, the dau. of Charles A. & Sarah Fifield (Thurston) Witt, the former of whom was born Oct 24, 1837, was a carpenter and builder, and the latter born June 18, 1833.
